A premium e-reader is now just $99 in the U.S.
Barnes & Noble’s flagship premium e-reader, the Nook Simple Touch GlowLight, will now retail for that low price in its stores and on its website.
Barnes & Noble has been aggressively marketing its Nook e-readers and ebooks since a series of poor earnings reports earlier in the year caused it to drastically rethink its device and digital content business. The blitz of promotions and discounts included a long-lasting Father’s Day sale and free ebook and e-reader giveaways.
The company’s poor performance and failure to build its ebook business to the satisfaction of investors helped oust CEO William Lynch, who was at the helm at the inception of the Nook business.
The moves, combined with the slow-growth physical retail business, has caused some commentators to question whether Barnes & Noble has a future and what it might look like.
